Mechanics of Internal Waves Propagating over a Varying Bottom Slope

چکیده
We studied theoretically and experimentally the transformation, attenuation, and setup due to shoaling and breaking of internal waves in a two-layer fluid system on a uniform slope. An image processing technique was used to illustrate 2D instantaneous displacements of density interface. These results were compared with the calculated values by using the method of characteristics, the simple shoaling model with energy dissipation, and the momentum balance equation based on a radiation stress concept. We also measured the upper and lower velocity fields for progressive internal waves by using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV).

A general wave equation for waves over rippled beds
A time-dependent extension of the reduced wave equation of Berkhoff is developed for the case of waves propagating over a bed consisting of ripples superimposed on an otherwise slowly varying mean depth which satisfies the mild-slope assumption. The ripples are assumed to have wavelengths on the order of the surface wavelength but amplitudes which scale as a small parameter along with the botto...
متن کاملA model of suspended sediment transport by internal tides
The ability of internal tides to resuspend and advect sediment over continental shelfs and slope regions is investigated by applying an internal wave and sediment transport model. Numerical experiments are carried out, firstly, with the ratio of bathymetry and internal waves characteristics creating critical, subcritical, and supercritical conditions, and secondly, for an observed section of th...
متن کاملTheoretical and experimental study of particle trajectories for nonlinear water waves propagating on a sloping bottom.
A third-order asymptotic solution in Lagrangian description for nonlinear water waves propagating over a sloping beach is derived. The particle trajectories are obtained as a function of the nonlinear ordering parameter ε and the bottom slope α to the third order of perturbation. A new relationship between the wave velocity and the motions of particles at the free surface profile in the waves p...
متن کاملInternal solitary waves: propagation, deformation and disintegration
Abstract In coastal seas and straits, the interaction of barotropic tidal currents with the continental shelf, seamounts or sills is often observed to generate large-amplitude, horizontally propagating internal solitary waves. Typically these waves occur in regions of variable bottom topography, with the consequence that they are often modeled by nonlinear evolution equations of the Korteweg-de...
متن کاملA Higher-order Internal Wave Model Accounting for Large Bathymetric Variations
Abstract. A higher-order strongly nonlinear model is derived to describe the evolution of large amplitude internal waves over arbitrary bathymetric variations in a two-layer system where the upper layer is shallow while the lower layer is comparable to the characteristic wavelength. The new system of nonlinear evolution equations with variable coefficients is a generalization of the deep config...
